The History of Bachata

In fact, the parallel between bachata and the blues is marked. Although bachata developed out of, and bachateros play, a variety of different rhythms, notably including merengue, the music which is specifically called bachata is a variant of the bolero. The bolero in Latin culture has traditionally been a romantic music, dealing with themes like deception and lost love. The bachatero, like the bluesman, sings about pain and trouble; one difference, though, is that while the bluesman hops on a southbound freight and keeps moving, the bachatero gets as far as the neighborhood bar and looks for solace in a bottle of rum in a dark corner!
The genre has passed through several phases since José Manuel Calderón recorded what is generally recognized as the first bachata single (“Borracho de amor” and “Que será de mi (Condena)”) in 1961. Indeed, long before Calderón, guitar music was the music of choice in the places of ill repute which became home to bachata. The guitar and guitar music like bolero and son were also the staples of the campo, the countryside, and with the death of dictator Rafael Trujillo in 1961 a number of musicians left the campo to record in the capital. The dictator’s family had virtually monopolized the music industry in the country, and when he was killed entrepreneurs began recording the first generation of bachateros. At this point the music was not yet referred to as bachata, but rather as “bolero campesino”. The word bachata originally denoted an informal party where guitar music was generally played—only later did it come to signify the music itself, and then in a denigrating manner.
When Calderón recorded, bachata was essentially a type of bolero, very little different from the Puerto Rican, Ecuadorian, Mexican and Peruvian music that inspired it. In subsequent years, the music began to define itself as a genre which, while still based principally on the bolero rhythm, is easily distinguishable from it. In order to understand these changes it is useful to divide the genre into the following categories, each of which roughly corresponds to a time period:

Frontier Bachata

Vallenato and Bachata

Bachata is easy to dance. Like anything else, the more you practice the better you get. But does anyone know where I can get free guitar music sheets for bachata?

With s many so called bachata's styles peolpe must question the ladies when asking her to dance. eg: excuse me would you like to dance bachata dominican style? excuse me would you like to dance bachata Urban style? excuse me would you like to dance bachata Modern style? excuse me would you like to dance bachata crunchata style? excuse me would you like to dance bachata califonia style? Can you belive it that some states in the united states have their own style? this is real funny, and is getting out of hand. You can blame these changes to instructor that are unable to dance the real so they came up with all these styles, but there is only one style and is "called bachata". Instructos are so lame that the saling bachata as something sexy and sensual, it is stupid to belive this because anything that involve a man and a woman can become senxual in a flash of course taking in consideration that there is an atraction. So bi thinking that bachata is sexy and sensual you then have to limit the people you dance with, lets make a list? shall we: your mom, sisters, nieces, grand mothers, sisters in law, cousins, boss's wife, your best friend's wife and their females grown children. I mean the list gets bigger so who are you really going to dance with? with a woman in a club who had too much to drink or someone who think like this and dont care about a man being all over her on the first son. For non hispanic people or even hispanic people is difficult to dance bachata, i mean as close as passible to the real thing. the real thing consist of the rythm, the steps and the flow without these 3 factors you are just dancing whatever. Bachata is so Dominican as apple pies are to the Americans and bull fighting is to Spain, Instructors are using slow music by groups such as Aventura, which is really bachata, is a mixture of R&B and bolero which bachata dancing lame.Instructor are saling bachata's boot-camp and telling people by the end of the boot-camp they will be able to go out that night and have a good time dancing bachata, not really it takes more than that a lots more. Like all mayor dances bachata require at least the basic skills to dance any type of song a club play unless you just want to dance a couple of song all night, that is why bachata the Dominican way (not style) is require. You can't do without it. Lee (el gringuito) claim to have tough 100,000.00 people to dance bachata.. them all the clubs should be flood it with people every weekend, maybe he did but people realize the first night that what they pay for did not really got them ready for the real thing is sad how people can rob another human being so easily. And all because they say bachata was easy to learn and that their way was the right way, you should be shame gringuito. Google el gringuito and you will see that in one of his video you will see him dancing like a broken elevator going up and down i guess he has invented the gruinguito's style. I agree than some performer I seen dance very nice, but if you take away the music you can't really tell what they are dancing. Once one of this performer wrote to me this "bachata is evolving and lots of people are following it""why is that" and told him because ignorant people will follow anything and anybody or just because they are benefiting from it, people follow Hitler, Jim Jones, heaven's gate, Chavez, Fidel Castro, Bin Laden and may others, following you will be a walk in the park.
